Stop Guessing About Your AI Maturity

Frontier AI labs are making massive leaps.

I spend every day in the AI space, and even I find myself in awe at the pace of model releases, new products, and new tools. There’s a near-Cambrian explosion of research, accelerating in every industry.

If you’re tapped into the speed and the progress, you can see jumps in math, security, biosciences and medicine. Just last week, the news broke that an AI-enabled vaccine is showing promising signs of curing skin cancer.

Then you look around at your own AI org, and progress feels somehow... underwhelming. You know your team is working hard, and you know their activity and output are measurably high by any measure you consider useful.

But you’re still waiting for that home run. You’re still hoping for the research, the solution that will prove the business case and take your AI org to the next level.

So, where is it?

When AI teams stall, it’s easy to lay the blame on bad data, small budgets, or the wrong headcount; these are obvious problems, and most leaders instinctively know how to solve them, whether or not they have the resources to do so.

But in our work at Hop Labs, helping pharma, research, and enterprise teams ship actual ML, we’ve found that those obvious problems are rarely the actual bottleneck; the real issue is upstream.

The problem is your org’s AI maturity – and whether or not you understand the level you’ve reached, and where you need to work to reach next.

We wanted a way to establish an initial diagnosis for our clients’ hidden constraints and give them a clear picture of where they stand, where they’re going, and what opportunities they could be missing.

That’s exactly what we’ve built.

We’ve called it the AI Org Maturity Assessment.

The AI Org Maturity Assessment

First – the test is free, and we’ve tried to make it fluff-free, too.

Second – you can take the test yourself and share your results with anyone else on your team via a permalink or a PDF. Anyone else can field the questions too; if multiple folks on your team get different results, you’ll probably have a solid conversation starter already!

Here’s how it works:

  1. The test places you on a two-axis map and scores you on eight dimensions. It takes roughly 4-5 minutes. You’ll answer a series of questions about how your team operates, what they do daily, the resources you have, and the problems you’re addressing.

  2. We’ll map your answers to Hop Labs’ internal AI maturity frameworks, built on our knowledge from over a decade of engagements with major labs, enterprise customers, and research orgs.

  3. We’ll give you an archetype based on our assessment of your org’s maturity level, challenges, and opportunities, along with our recommendations. You can download your results, save a link to access them later, and receive them in your email, too.

  4. Finally, we’ll give you a curated selection of books and other resources we’ve found helpful for orgs in your situation. Think of it as the Hop Labs book club.

Once you’ve taken the test, if you like, you can request a call and we’ll discuss the results, analyze them together, and brainstorm what you could do to move to the next level.

What are we actually measuring?

We look at two things:

  • Point of View: Does your team have a shared, concrete, business-rooted understanding of what problem AI is actually here to solve?

  • Operational Agility: Can your people do their best work, or are they forced to fight broken tooling and processes?

Based on these values, we can form an initial picture of the gap between your org's goals and aspirations and the reality of what you’re actually building and achieving today.
